Only 6 out of over 500 mobile towers in Gurgaon are legal – RTI reply
12 Aug, 2013
The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that only six out of more than 500 mobile towers in Gurgaon are legal.
Most of the mobile towers don't comply with the safety norms for tower installation formulated by the Union government in 2006. The norms impose restriction on towers in residential areas and also prohibit their construction within 100 metres of schools and hospitals. The rules also make it mandatory to obtain building plan and building structure certificate before installation of towers along with displaying radiation levels.
Due to non-following of norms, many housing societies have been fighting for the removal of the illegal mobile towers endangering the health of the residents especially children. However, the RTI reply from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) also reveals that out of over 500 illegal towers, the civic authorities have so far sealed only one.
