NGOs have failed to submit details of receipt of grants and expenditure
Advocate ML Sharma had filed a PIL with the Supreme Court alleging misuse of funds by Anna Hazare’s NGO Hind Swaraj Trust (HST). Justice HL Dattu directed the CBI to provide the details of the source of funds received, its utilisation and the yearly income-tax returns (ITR’s) filed by the individual NGOs. It will hear the matter in July.
The CBI obtained the information about operation of NGOs and status of audit of their funds from states and union territories. Some states Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh provided no data about the number of NGOs operating there.
The CBI had filed an affidavit before the SC stating that several NGOs have failed to submit details of receipt of grants and expenditure to income tax department.
