29 Jun, 2013
Applications were filed with different zonal officers of the Chennai Municipal Corporation under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get information about the money spent on group garbage bins.
Only five of the existing fifteen zones under Chennai Corporation responded to the RTI queries. Out of these, Madhavaram zone spent Rs. 23.08 lakh for 20 group bins, or Rs. 1.15 lakh per bin. Similarly, Tondiarpet zone said in the reply that they acquired 102 group bins for Rs. 1.11 crore, spending an average of Rs. 1.08 lakh per bin. A relatively lesser amount of Rs. 46,000 per bin was spent by the Teynampet zone which spent Rs. 70.83 lakh for 154 bins.
However, the corporation officials didn't agree with the RTI reply from the Madhavaram zone and said that the project was not introduced in the zone due to requirement of more workers and bins. After the revelation of the alleged irregularities, the Chennai municipal corporation has sought tender documents, estimates and measurements relating to the group bin project from the zonal officers. Further, the zonal officers have been asked to submit the copies of their replies to the RTI query or explanation in case they have they have failed to respond to the query.
