Will the Private Members Bill suffocate RTI Act?
A Shiv Sena MP from Shirdi, Bhausaheb R Wakchaure, has introduced a private members bill (Bill No. 70 of 2011) proposing that information requested under the RTI Act can be denied to applicants who:
- do not state the reason why they require the information, or
- If in the opinion of the competent authority the reasons given by the applicant are not adequate or are factually incorrect.
The RTI activists have strongly opposed the bill and have alleged that it would lead to opacity in the functioning of the public authorities.
