Huge sum being spent on judicial enquiries in Odisha
4 Jun, 2013An application was filed with the Department of Home Affairs of Odisha under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking the details and status of judicial enquiries ordered by the state government.
The reply from the department states that at least fourteen judicial commissions were constituted by the government since 2005. Out of these, only two judicial commissions have tabled their reports in the state legislature while in all other cases, the enquiries are still on.
The reply also states that these enquiry commissions have already spent huge money amounting to over Rs. 5.7 crore.
Justice CR Pal commission set up to inquire into the demands of different bar associations, constituted in 2008 is still to produce a report while over Rs. 82 lakhs have already been spent. Similarly, Justice B Panigrahi commission to enquire into Kandhamal violence of 2007 and enquiry commission to look into the killing of Swami Laxmanananda in 2008 have spent Rs. 1.29 crore and Rs. 96 lakh respectively but haven’t presented a report.
