Details of MLAs’ trips to Delhi not provided under the RTI
9 Sep, 2013An application was filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get information as to how many members of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly visited Delhi between June 2009 and March 2013, the reasons behind such trips and the cost incurred on them. The application also sought to know the details of the meetings held by the MLAs in Delhi.
The applicant filed another RTI application with the transport department, seeking information about the number of visits to Delhi made by the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief from December 2010 to March 2013 and the details of expenditure on his visits. When the information was not provided to the applicant, he filed an appeal with the first appellate authority of the legislative assembly as well as the transport department. The applicant didn’t get any replies from both the places following which he filed the second appeal with the state information commission.
However, five months have passed and the applicant is still to get the replies or the date of hearing from the SIC. When contacted, chief information commissioner reportedly said that due to heavy backlogs it takes around half a year for a hearing to take place after the second appeal is filed.
DoPT has directed to pro-actively disclosure the tours of ministers and officials and has even issued a memo for non-compliance of directions. The Punjab government has followed the step. Readers may like to refer to our past posts on the issue.
