83 Andhra Pradesh MLAs out of 295 have cases pending against them

The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that large number of politicians in Andhra Pradesh have court cases pending against them. The data provided in the reply shows that out of total 295 sitting Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), 83 have cases pending against them in various courts across the state. Out of these, 54 MLAs have been slapped with criminal charges.
Similarly, out of 60 Members of Parliament (MPs) in the state, 14 have cases pending against them and eight MPs have been charged with criminal activities. The reply also states that from among the 90 Members of Legislative Assembly (MLCs), eight are having pending cases against them and three are facing criminal charges. The reply shows that these politicians are spread across all the political parties. For example, 28 TDP MLAs are facing 83 cases, 14 TRS MLAs are facing 57 cases, six MIM MLAs are facing 39 cases and 26 Congress MLAs have 40 cases pending against them.
The information provided under the RTI Act does not include pending cases with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). As per a recent court ruling, anyone convicted of more than two years imprisonment would not be eligible to stand for elections.
