Three persons arrested for using RTI as a means for extortion
1 Feb, 2014The Rabodi Police in Thane have arrested three persons for extorting money from a developer under the pretext of illegal construction so called revealed by Right to Information (RTI) Act.
The accused met the developer pretending to be RTI activists and told that they had come to know about his construction being carried out in Castle Mill area through an application filed under RTI Act. They said that the RTI revealed his under construction building to be illegal and demanded him to give either 25 per cent share in the building or a flat.
However, the developer registered the complaint of extortion with the police which found during the investigation that the accused used fake letterheads in the name of an organisation Kamgar Sansthan to blackmail the people. The police said that the organization was registered in a different person's name and the registration number was also bogus. The police also claimed that the same letterhead was earlier used to send letters to civic officials also.
The session court has granted a three-day police custody of the accused and case has been registered against them under Sections 385, 383 and 34 of Indian Penal Code.
