Should foreign students in India be given the right to file an application under RTI?
20 Feb, 2012Many students have expressed the opinion that a RTI application has a better and quicker chance of getting a meaningful reply – to issues ranging from allotment of room, security matter, broken gym equipment etc. – than a direct application to the college administration. However, as the RTI Act does not grant the right to file an application to a foreigner, these students are unable to file a RTI application. A suggestion had come that option may be given to such students to file an application, even if it is at a higher rate than what is prescribed for an Indian citizen. The number of foreign students studying in Delhi University alone exceeds 15,000. Students in India come from over 70 different countries, mostly from India's neighbourhood and Africa.
