Scholarships for students delayed in Karnataka

According to information obtained through Right to Information (RTI) application from the Department of Social Welfare of Karnataka, there are 2.1 lakh beneficiaries of scholarships across the State to whom Rs. 1058.41 lakh was allocated in 2011-12 but only 44 per cent of the total amount allocated has been utilised so far. The less utilisation has been attributed to delay in release of grants by the Social Welfare department. The unutilized amount will lapse if not utilised before the end of the financial year. Critics have pointed to the need for timely release of funds and a mechanism for the transfer of funds online to students’ accounts.
