RTI reveals NHRC report of 16 fake encounters in AP
16 Jul, 2012Reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has brought in open the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) report which held 16 encounters during IPS officer PSR Anjaneyulu's tenure as SP of Kurnool and Guntur of Andhra Pradesh from 2000-02 as fake. The NHRC has ordered a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to each of the victims' families but has not recommended any action against the police. The copies of the report of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) were sent to the relevant government channels, including the chief secretary and the DG, nearly eight months ago but has come out in open now as a result of the Right to Information (RTI) application.
The persons who were killed were Erukala Srinivas, P Babu, Boya Venkata Ramana, Venkateswarlu, Nallabothula Sunkanna, Basivireddi Aswadha Reddy, Kalluri Venkateswarlu, Kistanna, Ramudu, Komaravolu Ramesh, Gundlakonda Srinivasulu and Rajababu in Kurnool and Kodati Venkateswarlu, Kodati Srinu, Kampa Srinu, Tadigiri Suresh, Macherla Lakshmana Rao and Dunna Sudhakar in Guntur district.
In November 2011, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) termed 16 encounters as fake and ordered compensation except for three cases - P Babu, Boya Venkata Ramana and Venkateswarlu. The NHRC is headed by ex-Chief Justice of India (CJI) Mr. K G Balakrishnan.
