The SHE-INSPIRE awards - Ministry of Science and Technology of India’s Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE), part of the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) scheme offers 10,000 scholarships every year @ Rs 80,000 for each student for pursuing Bachelor and Masters level education in the Natural & Basic Sciences. The 10,000 top rankers in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) of IIT, 10,000 top rankers in AIEEE and 10,000 top rankers of AIPMT and who also opt to study Natural and Basic Sciences in any academic institute or university leading to a graduate and post-graduate degree are eligible for these scholarships.
Nearly 200 students of the IIT Roorkee who are recipients of the this scholarship were getting the amount late and that too at a reduced rate of Rs. 60,000 against the appropriate amount of Rs. 80,000 per student. A reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act revealed that the IIT Roorkee authorities had kept aside Rs. 20,000 per student for ‘mentoring’ in any institute during summer/winter. The reply also revealed that the entire funds meant for disbursing this scholarship were not being utilized by IIT-Roorkee.
RTI application has helped the students of IIT Roorkee in getting the proper amount of scholarship now as due to them.
