RTI activist arrested on charges of extortion
3 Aug, 2012The Kurar police (Mumbai) has arrested a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) party worker Sunil Bairagi (33) and his associate Namdev Ahire (41), who claimed to be RTI activists on charges of extortion. They had allegedly approached a salon owner, Rajub Agrahari (42), in Malad (E) and demanded an amount of Rs. 80,000/- from him. Agrahari ran his salon from his house and had carried repairs in January 2012. They told him that the matter would be taken up with the BMC under the Right to Information (RTI) Act and the structure would be demolished if he failed to cough up the amount. They also threatened to his son would be abducted if he did not pay the amount.
The police investigation is in progress.
