RTI Act - super hit in Tihar jail too
9 Sep, 2012Right to Information (RTI) Act is being actively used by the people of India to keep a check on corruption and to get justice. But, the RTI Act is also getting popular among the inmates of Tihar Jail who are using their right to information to question the authenticity of prosecution evidence in court.
In one case the police claim that the convict was arrested in Rohini in Delhi but according to the Tihar inmate, he was arrested in Moradabad. To prove his point, the inmate has filed an application under the RTI Act seeking the details of his arrest including the names of the policemen involved in his arrest and their call details.
Sources say that almost every police district in Delhi receives more than 500 RTI applications every month and around 100 of them are filed from Tihar jail itself. About 30% of such applications are filed by undertrials themselves. It is not known whether the other jails inmates in India are showing a similar interest in RTI.
