Pending irrigation projects revealed by RTI
18 Aug, 2012Reply to an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has shown that that a number of region-specific irrigation projects were initiated in the Vidarbha region which are still in abeyance. Some of these projects have been pending for two or three decades. The reply to the RTI Application has revealed that the timely completion of 36 projects cleared by the government between 2004 and 2007 would have led to irrigation capacity of 4.91 lakh hectares. Vidarbha region has been in news for rampant farmers’ suicides which has led to declaration of many schemes for improving the condition of the farmers.
Based on this reply, social activists have approached the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court to intervene in the matter and issue directives to the government for the immediate completion of the projects. The bench has already issued notices to the concerned departments seeking reply in a month.
