Over 15,000 complaints and appeals are pending with MP SIC
3 Feb, 2014An application was filed with the Madhya Pradesh (MP) State Information Commission (SIC) under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get the details of the complaints and the RTI appeals that are pending with the commission.
The reply to the application states that the information commission received a total of 30,057 appeals and complaints during the period from 2005, when the RTI Act came into force and 2013 of which 14,927 were resolved. Hence, still there are 15,130 cases under RTI Act (13,098 second appeals and 2,032 complaints) lying pending with the information panel.
The main reason behind such huge backlog is the vacancy in the commission. The High Court had directed the state government in January, 2013 to fill up the vacancies in the SIC but no appointments were made. The court, in a separate order, has also asked the government to appoint the information commissioners by January 31, 2014.
Stating that for almost a year, the posts of the chief information commissioner (CIC) and ten other information commissioners are lying vacant, the applicant has demanded that the government appoint the commissioners at the earliest.
