No standards defined for trans fats in India
20 Feb, 2012
The Central Information Commission has ruled that if the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India has taken no step for specifying safety level trans-fats percentages in ghee and edible oil, it should at least admit this to an applicant under RTI Act. The public authority was directed to pay a compensation of Rs. 2,000/- to a RTI applicant for the loss and detriment suffered by him while a show cause notice for imposition of penalty was issued for failing to reply within the time limit. Earlier, the applicant claimed that most of the brands of vanaspati contain unhealthy levels of trans fats and wanted to know if any direction has been issued to publish the levels of the trans fats in their labels.
