No records related to state funerals in Maharashtra available
1 Feb, 2013
Reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that the fire in the Mantralaya building on June 21, 2012 destroyed all the records related to state funerals accorded to dignitaries in Maharashtra.
The General Administration Department (GAD) of the Maharashtra government has informed that since June 21, 2012 eight persons have been accorded a state funeral that include former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and the chief of Shiv Sena Bal Thackeray. No information about the state funeral of high dignitaries is available as the documents related to the same have been destroyed in the Mantralaya fire.
The GAD has informed that even the manual provided by the Central home ministry that laid down guidelines for state interment has been lost in the fire. A requisition for a copy of the manual has been made. The reply further informs that the authority to accord such an honour lies with the chief minister of the state and action in this regard is taken on his directions.
