More Information Commissioners to be appointed in CIC

The Central Government has accepted the proposal to appoint ten Information Commissioners in the Central Information Commission (CIC).
As per section 12 (2) of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 the Central Government can constitute the Central Information Commission that shall consist of the Chief Information Commissioner; and such number of Central Information Commissioners, not exceeding ten, as may be deemed necessary.
Section 12 (5) of the RTI act specifies that the Chief Information Commissioner and information Commissioners shall be persons of eminence in public life with wide knowledge and experience in law, science and technology, social service, management, journalism, mass media or administration and governance.
Currently, there are eight Information Commissioners and a Chief Information Commissioner in the CIC.
