Kochi City Corporation uses RTI to regain property
19 Aug, 2012
A cut in government spending has caused grave financial crunch in the Kochi Corporation. To overcome this cash crisis, the corporation is trying to regain its properties that have been illegally taken over by individuals.
For this the corporation needs to restore its properties, keep stock of them and regularize the financial transactions e.g. rent and lease agreements. Ironically, the corporation doesn’t have a proper asset register as mandated by a 2006 government order. Lack of proper documentation of rented and leased properties has caused most of them to be alienated.
The corporation now plans to collect data of its property from registrar offices through Right to Information (RTI) applications to prepare the asset register. The use of RTI Act by government corporations is uncommon and is a step on the positive direction.
