Karnataka SIC calls for removing wrong notions about the RTI Act
26 Mar, 2012Speaking at a workshop on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Information Commissioner of Karnataka State Information Commission (SIC) Virupakshaiah pointed out the need to dispel wrong notions among government officials regarding the Right to Information (RTI) Act. He said that the perception that implementation of the Act disturbed the officials is incorrect and the officials should realise that along with ensuring transparency in the functioning of government establishments, the Act would protect their interests also. By citing the RTI Act, the officials could resist the pressure exerted by the vested interests on the officials.
He also pointed to the responsibility of the officials to ensure that information sought by the public was provided at the right time as neglecting applications and providing wrong information would attract punishment. The workshop was attended by many including the Commissioner M.V. Vedamurthy, Superintendent of Police Raman Gupta, Deputy Secretary of the zilla panchayat Hanumanarasaiah.
