Increase in RTO work revealed through RTI
10 Jun, 2012Reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that over the past decade, there has been a massive increase in work at the three centers at Tardeo, Andheri and Wadala. The statistics show:
- the number of cars registered in the three RTOs in Mumbai city has gone up by an average 92%;
- the number of driving licences issued has gone up by nearly 100%, and
- the staff strength of the RTOs has dwindled, with 396 out of the 965 sanctioned posts remaining vacant for over a year now.
This has led to complaints alleging an inordinate delay in the issuing of new licences, renewal of old ones and registration of vehicles. It has been reported that out of the 266 sanctioned posts in the Transport Commissioner's office, only 162 were filled up while the rest (104) were vacant.
