How much are the teachers being paid for teaching job?
3 May, 2012An RTI application filed by the Secretary of Gujarat Rajya Talimi Hit Rakshak Samiti, has claimed on the basis of his Right to Information Act (RTI) application that 90 per cent of primary schools pay a salary of just Rs 1,500-Rs 4,000 salary to their teachers. In most of these cases, the amount is paid by cash. He demanded a better pay package for the teachers as per the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations to ensure good quality teaching and quality teachers at schools.
As per a recent GR issued by the Gujrat State Government, the Sixth Pay Commission norms will be implemented by all schools irrespective of the board to which they are affiliated w.e.f. June 2012. Further, the GR mandates that all the schools will have to mandatorily pay salaries to the teachers employed by them through account payee cheque only to be deposited in their salary accounts. The move is likely to curb exploitation of teachers by those school managements who pay peanuts to teachers by taking their signatures on registers.
Should the practise be emulated by the other states of the country?
