Gujarat SIC takes up special drive to clear RTI case backlog
5 Aug, 2012The pendency status of appeals in most Information Commissions across the country is too high to be considered as comfortable. The Gujarat State Information Commission (SIC) had over 11,000 Right to Information (RTI) cases pending with it three months back when it took up a special drive to dispose of appeals and complaints. During the special drive organised at six districts of Gujarat (Surat, Amreli, Vadodara, Rajkot, Mehsana and Ahmedabad) 1,785 cases were taken up. Between March and 30th June 2012, the SIC disposed of 808 cases while the remaining 977 were kept pending for further hearing. Organising such drives at different district places has helped in saving the time and money of applicants.
The Central Information Commission (CIC) disposes nearly 2000 cases every month which is amongst the highest in the country. It is time that the disposal of cases by the Information Commissions is brought to a more respectable level.
