Does the CBI use the RTI Act?
18 May, 2012It has been reported that in Chhattisgarh, the Central of Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is resorting to filing applications under the RTI Act to obtain copies of certain documents from Chhattisgarh’s health department. The CBI is investigating a case of alleged financial irregularities in the purchase of medical equipment for prevention of malaria. It has been reported that when despite repeated demands, the Chhattisgarh’s health department officials did not provide the documents needed by CBI, the investigating agency resorted to filing an RTI application.
However, their attempt appears to have gone in vain. The department has informed that the relevant files are “missing”. Readers may be reminded that the CBI itself has been placed in schedule II thereby making it beyond the reach of the RTI Act.
