Teams of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches at 21 residential and office premises of IRB Infrastructure, its subsidiary company Aryan infrastructures and executives with the two companies in Pune and Mumbai said to be relation to the murder case of RTI activist Satish Shetty. The searches were conducted at offices and residential premises of Virendra Mhaiskar, MD of IRB infrastructure, Deepak Gadgil of Aryan infrastructures and also at the premises of 15 other individuals.
Satish Shetty, a RTI activist, had alleged corruption in the acquisition of land for the Mumbai-Pune Expressway against IRB and Aryan Infrastructure, a subsidiary of IRB. In 2014, the CBI had filed a closure report in murder case of Shetty. The CBI had requested the Bombay High court to allow it to look into the complaints of Shetty suspecting that it led to the murder. A case of cheating and forgery was registered against Mhaiskar, Deepak Gadgil, authorized signatory of Aryan Infrastructure, and 11 others by the CBI after the high court permitted the investigation “in the interest of justice”.
Shetty was murdered outside his home in Talegaon in January 2010. In October 2009, he had lodged a complaint with the Lonavala city police against 13 people, including Mhaiskar and a sub-registrar. He had alleged fraud and cheating in land grabbing to the tune of nearly 1,100 acres of government and private land in Maval Taluk by use of forged documents and manipulation of land records. The news of raids have lead to a sharp decline in the share process of IRB by almost 10 per cent.
