Compensation for harassment
22 Nov, 2011Compensation for harassment
Background
A number of information regarding the action taken on a complaint sent by the appellant to the bank in July 2009 was sought. The CPIO provided certain information, but it was not clear as to what action the bank had eventually taken on that complaint. The appellant claimed compensation alleging harassment for two years.
View of the CIC
During the hearing, the Respondent claimed that the Appellant had been informed from time to time about the decision of the bank on his complaint. The CIC directed to PIO to inform the Appellant regarding the final outcome of the action taken on his complaint. Regarding the claim for compensation, the CIC observed that had the bank provided complete details about the final outcome of the complaint as desired by the Appellant, he would not have been required to go through this entire process resulting in the second appeal before the CIC. He deserves to be compensated for this. Therefore, in exercise of powers vested in the CIC in Section 19(8) (b) of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the CIC directed that the bank to pay a compensation of Rs 1000/- to the appellant.
