Are the state government GO implemented by the UP Police?
17 Mar, 2014Reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that Uttar Pradesh Police has only 120 station officers (SOs) from Scheduled Caste (SC) and 2% from the Scheduled tribe (ST) category.
As per a UP Government Order (GO) dated June 7, 2002, 21% station officers (SOs) should be from the Scheduled Caste, 2% from the Scheduled tribe category and 27% from other backward classes, including minority communities. This translates into having a minimum of 303 station officers from SC category and 30 from the ST category as there are 1447 police stations in the state. Currently, 614 station officers are from backward castes and 102 from minority community.
RTI activist Nutan Thakur who had filed the RTI application has pointed to the lack of implementation of the GO by the police.
