Using RTI to catch a tax-evader
3 Feb, 2012
A 31-year-old techie working with a multinational corporation in Bangalore saw that the bills given to a family member who purchased medicines from the chemist in Banashankari didnot have a Taxpayers' Identification Number (TIN). He filed an RTI application with the Commissioner of Commercial Taxes to find out whether the said chemist was a registered dealer. Based on that lead, Commercial Tax officers discovered that the dealer was unregistered and have slapped the dealer with a Rs 3-lakh fine. The Commercial Tax department has issued a thank you letter to the RTI applicant.
