RTI reveals large number of absentees from schools
5 Sep, 2012Information disclosed by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in a reply to an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act reveals that a large number of children in the age group of 6-14 years in Chhattisgarh are out of school despite Right to Education being a Fundamental right.
As per the data disclosed, 40,902 children were out of school in the academic session 2010-11 because of socio-cultural reasons and 49,755 children were out due for household works. For 10,051 children, the main cause of not attending schools was failure in studies and for 7,829 children, lack of access was the reason while 3,583 children didn’t attend schools due to non-flexibility in school timings and systems. The reply also states that 8,133 children did not go to school for uncertain reasons.
Overall more than 1.78 lakh children were out of school in academic session 2010-11 and about 1.28 lakh children in 2011-12 session.
