Reply to an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has revealed that an average of 221 people were bitten by dogs every day last year in Mumbai. The number of dog bites has shown an increase of 50 per cent in four years due to a surge in the population of stray dogs. The increase in the registered dog bite cases indicates more dogs on the street and also an increase in awareness go for anti-rabies medication and get the bites recorded.
The number of stray dogs in the city has said to have doubled to 150,000 since 2007. However, the number of deaths related to dog bites has decreased to six in 2011 from 14 in the previous year. This has been attributed to improved sterilisation and vaccinations.
