RTI reply shows thousands of cases of sterilisation failure in the country
24 Sep, 2012As per reply provided to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, it has come to light that a total of 2,700 failed cases of sterilization have been reported in the country so far out of which the maximum of 772 case belonged to the state of Rajasthan. The other noticeable states were Madhya Pradesh, UP, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, and Odisha which recorded 566, 420, 177, 125 and 102 cases of failed sterilization respectively.
Over 3 lakh sterilization (male and female combined) are conducted in the Rajasthan every year. In Rajasthan, 16 deaths were recorded in 2011 and four deaths have been registered due to complications following failed sterilizations so far. The government provides a compensation of Rs. 2 lakhs to the relatives of the deceased. The reply to the RTI application reveals that between 2009 and 2011, there were 4200 failed sterilization cases in Rajasthan in which Rs 10 crore was paid as compensation by the Rajasthan government.

The data points to a need to improve the surgical skills and the operation theatre conditions to reduce the mortality.
