Records pertaining to imposition of emergency untraced in PMO
22 Mar, 2012In response to the order of the Central Information Commission dated 3rd February 2012 directing the competent officials in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to trace the documents pertaining to imposition of emergency, the Minister of State in the PMO Mr. V Narayanasamy has informed that a thorough search was made to retrieve or trace records of correspondence between the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the President relating to proclamation of emergency. However, no such records were found in the PMO.
It implies that the records relating to an important event in the history of post-Independence India relating to imposition of emergency have not been preserved for future reference and public access.
