Name of a person who owns a company is not personal information under RTI
29 Feb, 2012Background
The appellant sought particulars of M/s. Teleone Consumer Products (P) Ltd, including the name of the person running the firm, his father’s name, residential address and the Police Station within whose jurisdiction the representative of the company is residing. The PIO provided the particulars of the firm while refusing other information under the Section 8(1) (j) of the RTI Act, claiming it to be personal information.
View of the CIC
The Central Information Commission held that the name of the person owning the company cannot be denied to the appellant and directed the PIO to provide the same if such information is available with the respondent. However, the Commission ruled that other details such as father’s name, age, his residential address, attract the provisions of Section 8(1) (j) of the RTI Act, since it is related to personal information.
