Life sentence to the killer of the daughter-in-law of RTI activist
13 Apr, 2012In one of the early cases of its kind, the additional district and sessions court of Fatehabad handed down life imprisonment to Dharambir Malik, a former sarpanch of Chandrawal village, who allegedly crushed to death the daughter-in-law of a RTI activist.
Jagdish Kumar of Chandrawal village had sought information about alleged embezzlement of pension funds for the aged persons and widows through a RTI application. On 9th February 2011, the ex-sarpanch Dharambir Malik and his driver Satbir went to the house of Jagdish Kumar house in four wheeler (SUV Innova) and tried to crush Jagdish to death. The daughter-in-law of Jagdish Ms. Sonu Rani, made an abortive attempt to stop the fleeing duo and was run over by the SUV. She expired on the way to hospital.
The Additional district and sessions judge (ADJ) L N Jindal also slapped a fine of Rs 6,000 each on former sarpanch Dharambir Malik and driver Satbir Singh apart from the life sentence.
