Demand for a strong whistleblower protection bill
11 Jul, 2012
The National Campaign for Peoples’ Right to Information (NCPRI) has demanded a strong and effective Whistleblowers’ Protection Bill, 2011 (Public Interest Disclosure and Protection for Persons Making the Disclosure Bill, 2010) to provide protection to the RTI users and anti-corruption crusaders. There have been a series of attacks on the RTI activists and crusaders who have tried to reform the system in the recent past. Mr. Akhil Gogoi was attacked in Punni village at Dharmapur in Nalbari district of Assam and after undergoing treatment at Nalbari civil hospital, he has been discharged today.
Expressing anguish over the attacks on RTI users, the NCPRI has demanded that the Assam government should act swiftly to identify the persons who attacked Akhil) Gogoi and bring them to justice.
There has also been a demand to disclose the recommendations of the task force set up in 2004 by the Centre to tackle the problem of floods in Assam.
