Should commercial ventures in education sector be left unregulated?
28 Nov, 2012In a reply to a query raised under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the department of education of Gujarat has accepted that it doesn’t have any mechanism to regulate or monitor the mushrooming private coaching centres in the state. The department also admitted that it doesn’t have any repository of any kind of information on the private coachings.
The department didn’t have data even for the simple queries like under which act private coaching and tuition classes in Gujarat state were registered, their names, the owners' names, teachers' qualifications, fee charged, the number of students, etc.
The department refused to reply to queries on why monitoring was being done or whether any other department was involved in monitoring.
