Sex ratio declining rapidly in in cities of Tamilnadu – RTI reply
29 Dec, 2012The reply to an application under the Right to information (RTI) Act shows that sex ratio has drastically declined in Madurai of Tamilnadu.
The data provided in the reply reveals that Madurai Corporation is one of the two corporations (the other being Chennai) in Tamil Nadu to have less than 970 female children for every thousand male children. The sex ratio which was 1002 in 2001 census has come down to 965 in 2011 census.
The said decline is claimed to be caused by unregulated functioning of scanning centres and fertility clinics in the district. The number of scanning centres in the district has increased from 12 in 2001 to 256 in 2011. The activists allege that many of these scanning centres are violating the Pre Conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act 2002. Advancement in technology is said to be the cause of the gender imbalance in many parts of the country.
