School closed abruptly due to low enrolment of students-RTI reply
14 Dec, 2012After Diwali vacations, when the students of the Pallavi Vidyalaya in Paldi, Gujarat visited their school, they were informed by a board that the school had been closed and that the parents should take the Leaving Certificate and get their children admitted in other schools.
School authorities said that the school was closed at the directives of the District Education Office (DEO). In response, the parents staged a protest at the DEO premises.
The reply to an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that the school had only 117 students and six teachers were employed by the school. The reply stated that as the school had very less number of students, the grant given by the state government was not justified. Therefore, the teachers were allocated jobs in different schools and the school was shut down.
The parents said that the school was charging them Rs 1200/- as fee which was very high as the school was a grant-in-aid school. The DEO officials have assured that the matter will be looked into and the excess fee would be reimbursed to the parents.
