RTI reveals more than 400 elevators without rescue devices in Gurgaon
9 Apr, 2013An application was filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to know about the safety details of the elevators installed in various companies and commercial buildings in different parts of Gurgaon. The reply to the application states that there are no automatic rescue devices (ARD) installed in 426 lifts out of 4,495 lifts and elevators installed in malls and offices of the city.
The state government made it mandatory in 2009 for all the lifts and elevators to be equipped with automatic rescue device after the death of an executive in DLF Cybercity when his head got crushed in the office lift. The penalty for non-compliance includes an initial amount of Rs. 50,000/- and subsequently Rs. 1,000/- per day till the device is installed.
Now, the Haryana government has issued directions to the Inspectorate Lifts and Elevators to disclose the names of those who have not installed ARD in their lifts.
