RTI reveals massive shortage of manpower in the Maharashtra health department
11 Dec, 2012The reply to an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that Maharashtra’s health department is facing crucial shortage of manpower in the public health division, medical colleges and hospitals units.
The data obtained through RTI shows that a total of 889 posts are vacant in the state health department. The number of vacancies includes the posts of three additional directors, seven joint directors and 17 deputy directors along with a regular Director of Health Services which has not been appointed for more than three years. It has led to overburdening of the existing officials who have to bear additional charges.
One reason of the vacancies is that the court has put a stay order on the recruitment to certain health posts through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) following objections in court regarding recruitment criteria.
