RTI reveals high instances of violent political clashes in West Bengal
15 Feb, 2013An application was filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get the details of violent clashes which took place in West Bengal between May 13, 2011 and October 31, 2011.
The reply provided by the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) mentions very high instances of political and student violence in the state and said that on an average almost 100 clashes occur in the state every month. The data in the reply shows that in the aforesaid five months 642 cases of violent clashes occurred in the state which claimed the lives of 27 people while another 926 political operatives and 128 students were injured.
The reply stated that out of 642 clashes, 586 were political ones and 56 clashes took place between different student groups at different places.
