RTI reveals high instances of domestic violence against dalit women
8 Mar, 2013The reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed high instances of domestic violence against dalit women in the inter caste marriages in Tamil Nadu.
The reply shows that out of total number of police cases registered between 2009 and 2012 in the state, more than 80 per cent of those women who faced domestic violence belonged to dalit sections. As stated in the reply, a total of 84 cases were filed by women against husbands for domestic violence, for deserting them after marriage and against men for sexual harassment by making false promise of marriage. 67 of these 84 cases pertained to dalit women while 17 were caste hindus. Among the 67 dalit women, 52 had been sexually harassed by caste hindu men by luring them on account of false promise of marriage. The data in the reply also showed that in more than 95% of all cases the perpetrators were caste hindu men.
The revelation comes in the backdrop of -Dharmapuri violence when caste outfits claimed that dalit youths lure caste Hindu women into wedlock in the name of love marriage only to blackmail the latter’s family for money.,
