RTI Awareness campaign in Tamil Nadu through street theatre

The Song and Drama Division of the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry is launching a campaign in all the 30 districts of Tamil Nadu to spread awareness about the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. This campaign shall involve nearly 120 artist and shall begin on November 19, the birthday of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Speaking at the inauguration of a two-day workshop at Chennai for the artistes to help them take the “message of the RTI correctly to the masses”, the Deputy Director of the Song and Dance Division’s regional centre informed that there would be nearly 300 programmes on RTI this year alone.
The campaign involves the use of folk art and street theatre to sensitize the rural people on RTI. The first such campaign was organised in the state in 2006 and this would be the second campaign in the state.
The Chief Information Commissioner of the State Information Commissioner (SIC) of Tamilnadu, K S Sripathy, said on the occasion that the citizens should be able to distinguish between “right information” and “right to information.”
