RTI applicant alleges being threatened by Municipal council chief
19 Feb, 2013An application was filed with the chief officer of the Jalna Municipal Council (JMC) in Maharashtra under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking information regarding the installation of borewells in the town. As the information under the RTI Act was denied, the applicant approached the State Information Commission. After hearing the appeal, the State Information Commission (SIC) ordered the municipal chief to furnish the information to the appellant.
But, when the applicant went to the official to get the information, the municipal chief abused the appellant and threatened him with serious consequences if continued to ask for more information. The appellant then went to the Kadim Jalna police station to file a complaint against the official but the police didn’t register the complaint. Then the appellant had to move court.
Finally, the chief judicial magistrate, after examining the case, has ordered the Kadim Jalna police station to register a case under Section 156 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code against the municipal council chief officer.
