Rise in the number of abortions in the government hospitals in Delhi
24 Dec, 2014Reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that 1,43,175 abortions (Medical Termination of Pregnancy or MTP) were conducted in the Delhi's government hospitals during the past six years (2008-14). As per the data provided by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, 42 fatalities were reported during the same period. The statistics shows that currently, an average of 65 abortions are done daily at the government hospitals of Delhi. The data does not include the figures of the private clinics or hospitals.
As per the data provided in response to the RTI application filed by Rajhans Bansal, the year-wise number of abortions done in the Delhi government hospital is as under:
2008-2009 : 9,504 abortions
2009-2010 : 20,696 abortions
2010-2011 : 26,241 abortions
2011-2012 : 27,487 abortions
2012-2013 : 30,376 abortions
2013-2014 : 28,869 abortions

The figures indicate that there is a rise in the number of abortions carried out at the government hospitals and the reasons need to be looked into. Suspicion has been raised that many of them might be on account of selective abortion of female foetus.
