Right to Information Centre opened in Kolkata for sex workers
5 Mar, 2014The Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC) observed International Sex Workers’ Day on 03-03-2014 by setting up a Right to Information Centre in Kolkata. DMSC fights for the rights of sex workers and the RTI centre is planned to equip its members to handle the cases of harassment against them in a better manner. In respect of the various issues involving sex workers the DMSC and All India Network of Sex Workers (AINSW) are planning to hold discussions with political parties and policy makers.
The RTI centre is expected to boost the confidence of sex workers and aid them in accessing information through the transparency law. It is also likely to assist the sex workers who feel helpless in the face of frequent harassment by the police.
There has been a demand to treat the sex work in a manner similar to a worker of an unorganised sector to enable them to be entitled to a universal pension.
