Pollution norms not followed by Trombay thermal power plant
16 Jul, 2013An application was filed with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) under the Right to Information (RTI) Act seeking to get its observation report on compliance of pollution norms by Tata Power Company (TPC)’s Trombay thermal power plant between 2008 and 2012.
The reply from the MPCB shows that the pollution norms were not followed for 40 out of 50 months till 2012 at the power plant. The report says that coal dust was found in the yard, factory premises, internal roads, and even on external roads during the periods when norms were not followed. The report also states that there were no impervious ash ponds to prevent underground percolation and there were no separate water meter installed to determine the actual quantity of sea water consumption.
The MPCB had also issued show cause notices to the TPC as to why additional pollution cess should not be imposed on the plants as indicated by its monthly compliance reports.
