Plots earmarked for schools to be used for commercial and residential purpose
19 Feb, 2013The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) earmarks plots for construction of schools in the housing layouts as a part of the community amenities.
The board, set up in 1961, has now decided to use more than 40 such plots earmarked for schools for commercial and residential purposes. The housing board has claimed that there were no buyers for the said plots which are worth more than Rs. 100 crore during the initial auction as well as subsequent re-auctioning. However, the reply to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has shown that many of these plots were not even put up for sale during the re-auctioning.
Many educationists are of the view that the TNHB had put heavy prices on the plots which made them beyond the reach of many institutions e.g. a 10, 000 square feet plot for primary school was priced at Rs. 4.67 crore and another high school plot was priced at Rs. 34 crore.
