No annual public RTI convention to be organised this year
4 Oct, 2014
No public convention for the Right to Information Act shall be held at New Delhi this year. The Annual RTI convention was a part of the celebration of the enactment of the RTI Act, 2005 and was organised by the Central Information Commission (CIC) usually around October 12, the day the RTI Act was enacted in 2005. It involved an annual stock taking of the RTI performance and saw the presence of eminent peoples from different walks of life like media persons, advocates, jurists, RTI activists, NGS’s, information commissioners, politicians, and even the prime minister on a couple of occasions. Since its commencement, the convention has witnessed an increase in participation from the public at large too. The convention took up a different theme every year and after examining the challenges, put up suggestions for the betterment of the RTI Act. It also provided a forum for threadbare discussions on different issues and exchange of notes by the participants.
A closed door meeting of current and retired information commissioners is likely to be held at New Delhi on the occasion. The Central Information Commission (CIC) has been functioning without a chief following the superannuation of Mr. Rajiv Mathur who completed his tenure on August 22
